Even the most shy of children can be brought out of their shell so to speak through support, encouragement
and gradual steps to become confident in front of others. Confidence builders can be used to help those who
seem to need more time to perform twirling maneuvers or to speak in front of others.
A routine which I like the troupe to perform is called the "Intro Routine." After warming up with one of our
street routines, I arrange the group in a performance position (several rows) then by announcing the twirlers
name, each take a turn moving forward to the front-center to perform a preset number of moves (or sometime a
few twirls of their choice). When performing for an audience there is a moment of applause. The twirler then
returns to their original placement. The twirlers just love this routine.
Children are provided with regular instruction and are not required to have prior twirling experience. In fact,
most of the children come into the ministry with no twirling experience at all. With some quality instruction,
practice and the desire to succeed, virtually everyone can learn the necessary skills.
All children are welcome to participate no matter what shape or size. It would seem as though one could assume
that to be the case, however as little as five years ago, I had a mother share an unfortunate and humiliating
experience. A local baton-twirling group had turned her two daughters away because of an imposed weight standard.
Thankfully the girls did not give up. They learned about the "Joyful Twirlers" and were welcomed with open arms.
This faithful family would go on to become an active part of the ministry over the next few years.
The goal of "Joyful Twirlers" is not necessarily to be competitive. Remember that while baton twirling and marching
are fundamental to "Joyful Twirlers," the emphasis is on the main mission which encourages others to seek Christ and
sing praises to His name. If twirlers are dedicated and participating in practice regularly, they are encouraged to
perform even if their skills are not yet perfected. I have observed that when twirlers are participating regularly,
attending practice sessions, etc., they know the routines and are able to perform them. On the other hand, those who
don't show up for practice regularly, often feel frustrated and discouraged. Of course, this can cause setbacks for
the entire troupe since they work together as a unit. We express to the parents and guardians that absence usually
results in a feeling of being behind and lost in the routines. Not a good feeling.
Twirlers may reach a level of skill whereby they are ready for and motivated by competition. In that event, I would
recommend participation in some competitive events. Some members of my troupe have enjoyed the experience of
competitive twirling. There are opportunities to watch and learn new twirling skills and there are opportunities
to witness. The "Joyful Twirlers" uniform has a cross emblem, which prompt many to ask more about our troupe and
our faith. I would caution to be very selective when considering competitions since some can be quite costly. You
must also understand the rules and specifications of these competitions.
You won't get spaghetti at McDonalds
Who we are and what we are not...
My husband and I recently had the privilege of meeting one of our coaches and her husband for dinner. John and Lori,
together with their three daughters, Heather, Rebekah and Elisabeth, had been dedicated members and active members
of "Joyful Twirlers" pretty close to the beginning. John, who is quite perceptive, gave me what I think is a brilliant
analogy concerning how to define who we are as a ministry. He said, "You know, we have an understanding and vision of
what the Joyful Twirlers is, but its a good idea to let it be known what it is not." For example, you go to Burger
King or McDonalds and you know your not going to get spaghetti." In light of John's statement please read the following:
Joyful Twirlers will not acquiesce in the use popular culture music or costume which does not align with our Christian
mission; All music selections must be approved by the director.
Music selections are primarily Contemporary Christian, Traditional Christian, Christian remakes, songs that assert a
clear message of our faith in Christ Jesus. Some classical, patriotic, inspirational or old-time novelty song selections
may also be used. We strive to maintain at least an 80/20 ratio - 80% Christian in other words. The use of Christian music
is an essential and integral part of the ministry.
Joyful Twirlers does not approve costumes that expose the stomach or navel, or that are backless. Good judgment must be applied.
Our current uniform is stylish and tasteful and functions well as sports apparel. Our standard uniform is purple and
white with silver/iridescent cross and trim. The standard uniform is worn in parades and at special events. Feature
twirler performers, such as solos and duets, may wear a performance costume that has been approved by the individual director.
Directors are not approved for membership without a statement of faith, which has been reviewed and approved by
"Joyful Twirlers" selection committee. Non Christian/unbelievers in Jesus Christ, agnostic, atheist and the like are
not permitted to serve in a directors or coaches capacity. Outside contracting of professional help, i.e., professional
Twirling Instructors, photographers and should be highly scrutinized. Guest speakers are to be in alliance with our mission.
We do not tolerate disrespect towards others. Even though all are welcome, "Joyful Twirlers" will not tolerate
disrespectful behavior towards fellow members, coaches and those to whom we witness.
Joyful Twirlers is not a group that will allow poor behaviors and influences that may become detrimental to other
members. Thus far, a high percentage of our twirlers are from bible believing, Christian families who desire to
have their children grow in Christ and enjoy the benefits of Christian activities. We do not want to destroy what
these Christian families have worked hard towards. We want to reach out to the lost, and have indeed done so, however
we are very careful to maintain a wholesome and supportive environment that will not cause other to fall.
Parental support and involvement is key to the success of the ministry. We understand that often there are two
working parents and at times members may need a ride to practice and at times performances; no problem. We desire
to support one another with logistical needs and even scholarships when money is tight. Still, parents and guardians
must be committed to seeing that their child is getting to practices, participating in performances, following rules
and being current on membership dues. Remember that these dues are minimal, but essential to the successful operation
of the ministry. Quite a few of our dedicated parents and guardians go on to become regular volunteers and coaches.
